Medicare Advantage for Veterans
Some veterans may not think that enrolling into Medicare is necessary. However, you may be surprised by how many benefits you will gain from enrolling in a Medicare Advantage Plan. While VA coverage can be very restrictive, once you are eligible for Medicare, you will be allowed to combine TRICARE (or other VA health coverage) with Medicare Advantage.
In order to get a Medicare Advantage Plan, you must be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B. That is usually encouraged by the VA anyway. Once enrolled in Parts A and B, a Medicare Advantage Plan will provide the same basic coverage you get on Original Medicare with some additional benefits such as Dental, Hearing and Vision. Also most Medicare Advantage plans come with a Silver Sneaker gym membership, as well as some over-the-counter medication benefits.
If you are not 100% happy with your VA coverage or if you live very far from your closest VA facility, we highly recommend considering Medicare Advantage. If you are planning on enrolling into Medicare Parts A and B, it will in most cases not cost you an additional monthly premium to get an Advantage Plan as well. You will gain access to more hospitals and Doctors in your area, and you will not lose your VA benefits, as VA members are allowed to maintain their coverage with the VA as well as have full Medicare benefits. You can double dip!
