Parts of Medicare

There are four “Parts” to Medicare, and most people new to Medicare find this very confusing. Why are there four parts to my Medicare Insurance? And what’s the difference between the Parts of Medicare and Medicare Plans? It is very important to learn how these fit together and to make the most of these benefits, if you qualify to receive them.

Here at Medigap Insurance Carriers, we like to keep things simple! There are 4 parts, four letters! A, B, C (or a Supplement) and D. We highly recommend having a solution for each of the four parts.

Here at Medigap Insurance Carriers, we like to keep things simple! There are 4 parts, four letters! A, B, C (or a Supplement) and D. We highly recommend having a solution for each of the four parts.

Part A of Medicare

Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.

Part A covers approximately 80% of your hospital bills, and does have a yearly deductible.

Most of the time Part A is free. The Part A premium will have no monthly cost as long as you have worked 10 years or 40 quarters at some point in your work career.

Part B of Medicare

Part B covers outpatient medical expenses. Part B helps pay for medically necessary services performed on an outpatient basis. Part B covers Doctor visits, surgeries, x-rays, lab work, and preventative services. Without Part B, you would be uninsured for doctor’s visits (including doctors who treat you in the hospital). Part B does have a monthly premium to be paid to the social security administration.

To find out how much your Part B premium will be give us a call at 866-599-6585 or visit our Cost of Medicare page. Part B covers only 80% of all of your Medical bills. There is no cap on your out of pocket expenses.

It is important to know that if you just have Medicare A and B, you are exposed to 20% of all your medical bills, and there is also no coverage for your prescription drugs. If you have Medicare A and B, we highly recommend a secondary insurance or a Part C, as well as a Part D insurance plan.

Part C of Medicare

First and foremost, the reason for this part of Medicare is to help pay for the 20% that Medicare A and B does not cover. For this third part of Medicare you have a choice between a Medicare Part C plan (which is also referred to as a Medicare Advantage plan), and a Medicare Supplement plan.

A Medicare Part C plan or Medicare Advantage, is private insurance. It’s an alternative benefit to original Medicare. Medicare Advantage may include prescription drug coverage, along with other extra benefits such has hearing, vision and dental. Medicare Advantage usually has low premiums. The cost of Advantage plans varies by carrier, county of residence, and plan selected. You will usually have copays to pay for services and a network to adhere to. You do not enroll in part C at the Social Security office, as this part is offered through private insurance companies. Therefore it is highly recommended to speak to an agent that is well versed in Medicare Supplement and Advantage products before enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan.

A Medicare Supplement plan is the other option for the third part of Medicare. A Medicare Supplement will pay for the 20% that Parts A and B leave you to pay, without the need to leave original Medicare and without the need to adhere to a network. Most Medicare Supplement plans will give you 100% hospital and medical insurance, and there are even plans with no copays.

Choosing between a Medicare Supplement plan and a Medicare Advantage plan is a very important decision. A non-biased agent who offers both options is a valuable asset to you. Your choice should be made with multiple factors taken into consideration: your budget, your location, your health, and other factors. Call us at 866-599-6585 to discuss this choice at no cost to you.

What is Medicare Part D?

Medicare Part D is also known as prescription drug coverage. Part D coverage is available as a Stand Alone Option (PDP) or as part of a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C). Medicare Part D plans are offered by private insurance companies. In order to choose the right prescription drug plan, you and your agent will need to take into consideration all of your prescription drugs, and your preferred pharmacy of choice. This information will need to be cross-referenced against all of the Part D plans available in your area. You should choose a plan that gives you the lowest out of pocket cost, which also takes all of your other health insurance needs into consideration.
